Your handmade pottery can last many years if you use some simple methods and rules of use. Handmade ceramics, whether it is stoneware or porcelain are quite durable and meant for use and can withstand frequent washing. Pottery care is simple and easy with your stoneware or porcelain. Clay that is glazed and fired properly will stand up to daily use and washing. Using mindful care practices and care for your handmade ceramics will ensure your enjoyment of your pottery for the long term.
Proper handling and storage of handmade ceramics
Proper handling and storage of your pottery will help to extend its life in your home.
Store it in cupboards being careful not to stack it too high. You may choose to put a piece of paper or felt between pieces but it is not always necessary. Store your handmade pottery at room temperature. Avoid using it in the freezer as food storage as there is risk of thermal shock when you remove it. It will be more prone to breakage with even a small bump when it is frozen. When using your ceramics for cooking, good practice is to put the pottery in the oven while it is warming up, to allow it to warm up too. Following these tips can increase the longevity of your pottery pieces.
Cleaning your handmade ceramics
Many stoneware and porcelain pieces can go in the dishwasher, carefully placing them so they don’t bang against each other during the wash cycle. If you love hand washing, using a soft sponge or cloth and warm soapy water works well. Be mindful not to stack pottery in the sink as dropping something on it or banging it into each other can cause cracks. It is recommended to hand wash certain items like unglazed pieces or items with delicate attachments or 24 kt gold highlights added to its surface. To get stubborn food that is stuck on, use a non abrasive, plastic scrubber. A glossy, well glazed piece will clean up beautifully over and over. If you have pottery that has stains, you may be unable to get those out due to the nature of the glaze on the piece. If it is a matte (non shiny) glaze it can absorb food stains, right into the clay, over time if it isn’t fired properly. Each piece of my pottery goes in the dishwasher as often as possible, both for convenience and testing, many are over 20 years old and still functioning wonderfully!
Handling temperature changes and avoiding damage
Your handmade ceramics can be prone to thermal shock, which can cause cracking or breakage. This can happen when taking the pottery from one extreme temperature to another extreme temperature, like from the freezer to a hot oven. Avoiding sudden temperature changes will help prolong the life of your beloved pottery. Unless it is specifically sold as safe for the stovetop, never put your pottery on the stovetop with the burner on underneath it. Avoid all contact with direct heat sources like burners, flame and hot plate appliances as this is almost certain to crack your piece.
Maintaining the surface and longevity of your handmade ceramics
Taking care of your handmade ceramics is important to keep them looking beautiful and lasting longer. Over time, pieces like stoneware develop a natural patina, which gives them a unique and charming look. Acidic foods and drinks, like citrus or tomato-based products, may affect the glaze and cause discoloration or dullness although many artists formulate their glazes to withstand acidic foods and discoloration shouldn’t be normal. To protect the surface, it’s best to clean ceramics gently using a soft sponge and mild soap. Don’t use harsh or abrasive cleaners that can scratch or damage the glaze. Proper care will help preserve the pottery’s beauty, ensuring it stays in great condition for years to come. By protecting the surface and glaze, you’ll maintain the special look of your ceramics while ensuring they last for a long time.
Taking the best care possible of your ceramics
Using the above quick & simple tips, you will maintain both the beauty and functionality of your handmade ceramics. Your pottery is built to last for generations with proper ceramic care. It preserves their unique aesthetic qualities, such as the natural patina and glaze, but also ensures they remain functional for everyday use and special occasions. Regular, gentle cleaning, proper storage and reasonable care in handling will keep your pottery in great condition, allowing you to enjoy its beautiful charm for years to come.
